"Pepe" means butterfly in the Keapara language from the Central Province, flew into Brisbane earlier this week on their way to the Cook Islands for pacific series and the chance to play in the 2011 world championships in Singapore. PNG coach Pole’ Kassman was looking forward to the competition and the chance to play in the world championships, the pepes will also be going to India for this years commonwealth games.
Local South Brisbane Strikers netball players Richanda Kassman and Yvonne Magutau along with Maleta Roberts (Suncoast Lynx) and Tiata Baldwin (Kedron Services Club Cougars) joined the PNG squad in a netball friendly match against Holden Cruze Cup Suncoast Lynx which was held at All Hallows School. It was an entertaining match with Lynx dominating the first three quarters with PNG turning it on in the final quarter out scoring Lynx 21 – 9.
Lynx took the honors 52-49 at the final whistle, PNG coach Pole’ was pleased with the effort especially with the four Brisbane based players first run with the team and also no injuries to the players. Good luck to PNG “Pepes” Richanda, Yvonne, Maleta and Tiata along with the rest of the team, I would also like to thank the All Hallows student who was very polite and helpful when we asked for directions to the netball match.
