Netball news and information on the web

Up and in

The Up and In program is a one-stop shop for aspiring netball shooter's who want to be the best.  The program is a 50-page e-book with chapters designed to enhance your accuracy, movement and confidence in the goal circle.

Up and In is the ultimate shooter's guide offering comprehensive information on:
Shooting technique - a step to step process on developing a consistently accurate shooting motion.
Strong shooter body - outlines the muscles and exercises important in being a strong and steady netball shooter
Daily shooting program - includes 18 shooting programs for you to print out and take to your nearest netball post.
Tips and tricks - features set-plays and detailed descriptions of shooter-specific moves that will fool any circle defender.
Shooting psychology - provides you with information on shooting confidence
Resources - features a printable shooter's training diary and goal sheets.

Netball shooting is one of the most important aspects of the game and coaches of junior teams should spend some time conducting specialist sessions with their netball shooters.  The "Up and In" e-book provides guidance for coaches of junior level teams; but has been written to suit the younger audience, Leanne Hughes invites you to have a look at her website upandin.com.au

Feedback from Energy Netball Subscribers

Many coaches have subscribed to the Energy Netball Website. I have asked some coaches if they wouldn’t mind sharing with us how they utilise the coaching material and to give some feedback on how this coaching resource assists in the development of their team and themselves.

Our willing participants are:

Wendy - Coach/Teacher, Victorian State High School

Julie - Coach - Club, Northern NSW

Rebecca - Coach - Club, UK

Leanne - Coach/Teacher - Primary School

South Island, New Zealand

Wendy (Coach/Teacher), Victorian State High School

I first found out about the Energy Netball Website from a parent of one of the players I coach. I subscribed to the newsletter to see if the site was something I would be interested in. Visiting the website I enjoyed the blogs which are available to read even if you don’t have a subscription to the site. The coaching resources looked extensive so I approached my school for the funds to purchase a subscription.

After reading the information in the blogs, the one about ‘Information for School’s interested me. I contacted Melissa to see if we could have multiple users for the one subscription. We were given permission so that allowed me as the Netball Coaching Co-ordinator to organise a structured coach education program for teachers and netball coaches in our school community.

What I do is set a training session and a team strategy for the week and we all coach our players the same session for that week. I also copy the blogs and distribute them to the coaches as I find there is always something that is practical and easy to implement.

This week we are doing the Training Session ‘Intercepting’ and also teaching our players a ‘Centre Court Press’. Both sessions are available on the site.

I also print off the stat sheets for each coach so we can all keep a record of our Shooting Stats, Game Stats and also Team Lists.

I recommend the site as it has given me the opportunity to help other coaches and strengthen our school netball program. Our teams’ results are proof that the information being distributed to the coaches is being used to educate the players.

Julie (Coach - club), Northern NSW

I am from a very small club in Northern NSW. I found this website googling ‘Netball Coaching Resources’ so had a little visit.

As soon as I entered the site and read the player feedback, blogs and checked out the information available I subscribed.

Wow! I couldn’t believe the sessions. I printed them off and began a Netball Coaching folder and put every session into a category as the Website does.

I printed off all the training sessions and all the team strategies. I printed off the shooting programs and distributed them to my shooters. I printed off the blogs and I file them so I can refer to them for particular situations.

When I started going to Netball, other coaches were asking me what I was doing. I had my players doing new centre passes, back line throw-ins and side line throw-ins. They were also putting on a small zone and I had never coached this before so we were slowly improving and picking up some intercepts from the opposition as we were learning this new defensive strategy. We are quite good at this now.

I contacted Melissa to see if our small club could share the one subscription and it was approved so all the coaches are into the Energy Netball Website printing off madly and coaching new techniques.

I love this site and it has given me a personal lift in how I feel about my coaching. I was getting tired and bored of what I was teaching and I’m sure that would rub off on my players. Our season has been great and the players look forward to every training session so they can learn something new. This week will be ‘Inside and Outside Leg’. Was a little bit hard to get my head around but I understand it and now I will pass this onto my players.

Rebecca (Coach - club), United Kingdom

I found this site googling Netball Coaching Drills. I instantly subscribed as I love the Australian style of Netball and in the UK we have been influenced by our National Coach, Sue Hawkins an ex Australian Player.

Our season hasn’t started yet although we are organising squads so selections have begun. I have printed off all the training sessions and team strategies and put them in a display folder ready for the season ahead.

I have never had access to so many drills, training sessions and strategies and what I enjoy about this site is logging on when I have a little time and checking out the blogs and I must say I’m excited about planning the season ahead. A lot of the information is new to me so I’m looking forward to adopting some new coaching techniques and I want my players to be interested in what I can teach them.

Leanne (Coach/Teacher - Primary School)
South Island, NZ

I can remember Melissa coaching National League in New Zealand many years ago. I also remember her getting a media award for promoting the game. I think Shore Rovers wore the first body suit in the National League. When this dynamo came over from Australia she certainly had an impact on who she coached. Shore Rovers came third in the National League that first year she coached and it was surprising because they had so many young players.

As soon as I heard Melissa had consolidated all her coaching techniques and had them available I subscribed.

I love the way the sessions are theme based and in lesson plan format. The standard of quality sessions has improved my coaching ability and has helped my team improve this season. I use the Stat Sheets every week and the girls enjoy going through them at our next training session so we can see how much we have improved from last week’s stats.

There is a ‘Buddy System’ for girls working in pairs away from my structured trainings. I have printed them off and distributed them to the players. I have done up a roster so every two weeks the girls work with someone else so they get to know each other.

The shooters have a Shooting Program each and I monitor their technique and stats every week. Melissa made a DVD ‘Shooting for Excellence’ a while back which I still have so I use that along with the shooting programs to assist my shooters. I have noticed the shooters seem to feel more relaxed because they have more direction.

I also enjoy the blogs and for me they are hands on information that I use every week.
I hope this site continues to pump out quality information as I’m certainly enjoying the great resources available at the moment.

In Summary

The video work goes up very shortly and is in completion phase for Defending the Shot. Team Newsletter Templates are under construction at the moment along with examples of the information coaches distribute to parents and players on a monthly basis.

I hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying your Netball Season. Remember nothing comes easy so keep up the hard work.

Kind regards
Melissa O’Brien

Pacific Netball Series - Cook Islands

The Pacific Netball Series began last, Thursday 3 June, in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Four teams, Cook Islands, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Samoa, are fighting to find out which one is the top Pacific netball nation. The tournament started with a low key opening ceremony followed by the first two round robin games.
In the first game Fiji defeated Samoa (50 - 45) while in the second the hosts, Cook Islands won a close encounter with Papua New Guinea. At one stage the Cooks led by 10 goals but PNG clawed back to trail by just 2 goals at the finish. (59 - 57).

In game three Samoa (world rank 8) met Papua New Guinea (ranked 12). Samoa grabbed an early lead but in this fast and exciting game PNG  played with determination and on several occasions the two sides were tied, however at the final whistle it was Samoa with the win 57 - 54. Fiji met Papua New Guinea, Fiji swept to an early lead and finished the first quarter 14-7 ahead. PNG (in red) pulled back three goals in the second quarter but still trailed 24-20 at half time. Both sides scored ten goals in the third quarter (34-30) and in the final session Fiji potted 13 goals while PNG managed 12. The final score was Fiji 42 PNG 42. It was a very good performance by the PNG players who fought right to the final whistle and kept the eventual series winners on their toes.

In the final game of the Pacific netball series the hosts, Cook Islands, met Samoa. The first quarter was close with Samoa ahead by one goal (13-12) but from then on Samoa played steadily while the Cooks struggled to find consistency. At half time Samoa led by 25 goals to 22. In the third quarter the Cook Islands pulled one back (37-35) but Samoa pulled away in the final quarter to win by ten goals (56-46) and gain the second spot in the world championships in Singapore in 2011.

2011 Men's and Mixed Nationals

Sydney to Host 2011 Men's and Mixed Nationals

THE Australian Men's and Mixed Netball Championships will return to Sydney in 2011 for the first time in five years.

New South Wales, which last hosted the event in 2006, is set to hold the event from Saturday, April 23 to Sunday, May 1.

The news follows an increase in participation from New South Wales at the 2010 Nationals, held at Oakleigh in Melbourne's south-east.

NZ to tour Australia

New Zealand to tour Australia in October 2010

The All Australian Men's and Mixed Netball Association is excited to announce the return of international competition to its annual schedule.

After a meeting with the New Zealand Men's and Mixed Netball Association, the two bodies signed an agreement which will see Australia and New Zealand contest a three-test series across open men's, mixed and under-23s divisions in Melbourne in October 2010.

New Zealand will host Australia in Auckland in October the following year, with the series then alternating between the countries.

AAMMNA president Grant Crocker said the agreement was a positive step that would build on the growing success of the annual Australian national championships.

"This is a significant move by the New Zealand board which will have an incredibly positive impact,'' Crocker said.

"For the first time in nine years there is a clear and complete pathway for our young players."

The two countries also discussed potential future tours to England, the US and the Caribbean and involvement with other emerging netball regions.

    Michael JohnsDear Garry,

"Wow!  What was that?"  This was the comment I heard all night from the 14,165 NY Liberty fans, most of whom saw Netball for the first time.  Netball players and supporters from around the country should be proud of having the largest crowd ever at a women's sporting event to watch a live Netball game.

Netball America couldn't have done this if it wasn't for the awesome support from over 45 volunteers.  These volunteers have been working hard for the past 10 months to make this an entertaining event.  Our member spotlight goes to one such volunteer, Joe Luczka - read about his hard work below.  Our event sponsor, Fulton Francis Consulting, also lent a helping hand- thanks Brendan!

Season 7 American Idol finalist Michael Johns sang the roof off the Garden and was completely in his element chatting with Netball fans.  To hear more of Michael, purchase his latest CD.  Michael also showcased his Netball talents, giving shooting tips to Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket).  To see proof, click here.

The full report and images from the Madison event are avaliable at www.netballamerica.com.  Also, check out 'Netball America' on you tube.  Click here for the professional video footage from Josh Eisenberg at Fridge Films.

In support of first lady Michelle Obama's campaign against childhood obesity, Netball America will be participating in the "Let's Move Too" Community Fair in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday June 5.  We would love to see you at this event.

EC JagsCongratulations to the East Coast Jaguars!
The East Coast Jaguars proved to be the champions on their home turf.  The West Coast Lightning will be looking forward to a rematch on August 20th at Staples Center in LA.
    Thanks a Bunch!
Netball America would like to thank all donors who supported sponsoring 30 teachers and students from the George Washington Carver High School to attend the Madison Event: Christine Hayward Family; Comets Netball Club; Margaret Munro; Carolyn Johns; Sean Brown; Tom & Crystie Rooney; Karen Horsfield; Cheryl Englehart; and Arun Rajappa.
    And the Winner Is...
Congratulations to Crusaders Netball Club for winning the ticket competition with 95 tickets.  Although just short of the 100 for the VIP prize, you have won a NY Liberty memorabilia pack which kidsyou'll be receiving shortly.  In order to hold these events, we need to come together as a Netball community in order to sell tickets.  Thanks to all the clubs who supported in this effort which allowed our players to have prime-time on the Madison floor.
Netball America and the "Let's Move Too" Community Fair
County of Los Angeles Public Health Officer Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding stated in a recent article that there is a clear association between poverty and higher rates of obesity. He further stated that there is a clear correlation between living in areas with limited access to parks and kids in the poorer neighborhoods often eat chips and soda instead of fruits and vegetables, in part, because it is cheaper per calorie.  The citywide average for obese children is approximately 25.4 percent while our service area rate of obese children located in the 8th council district is 29.3 percent.

This is why Netball America is helping promote awareness at the "Let's Move Too" Community Health Fair this Saturday, June 5, 2010 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at 83rd and San Pedro, LA, 90003.  Please contact us if you would to support this event.
Member Spotlight - JoeMember Spotlight: Joe Luczka
American born and raised, Joe Luczka was first introduced to Netball by Netball America at the WNBA event at Staples Center last September.  Even though Joe lives on the East Coast, curiosity got the better of him and he flew to Staples to find out more about one of the popular women's sports in the world which Americans just haven't heard of.  Joe is excited to be on the ground floor of something new with the potential to grow and has volunteered his time to make this happen.
For the Madison event we can't thank Joe enough for his time and dedication - visits to the Garden to do planning; organizing equipment for trials and the event; selling tickets; visiting member training sessions; rounding up more volunteers; visiting restaurants and fitness clubs promoting the event; dealing with all the tshirts, brochures etc and making sure they got where they needed to go.  He even paid a visit to our member Emily from the Wilson Gray YMCA in Connecticut.
As a a thank you to Joe he received a personal signed copy of Michael Johns CD 'Hold Back My Heart'.  It's people like you spreading the Netball word that will help grow Netball in the USA.

    PNG "Pepes'

The 'Pepes' are the National netball team of Papua New Guinea.  "Pepe" means butterfly in the Keapara language from the Central Province, flew into Brisbane earlier this week on their way to the Cook Islands for pacific series and the chance to play in the 2011 world championships in Singapore. PNG coach Pole’ Kassman was looking forward to the competition and the chance to play in the world championships, the pepes will also be going to India for this years commonwealth games.

Local South Brisbane Strikers netball players Richanda Kassman and Yvonne Magutau along with Maleta Roberts (Suncoast Lynx) and Tiata Baldwin (Kedron Services Club Cougars) joined the PNG squad in a netball friendly  match against Holden Cruze Cup Suncoast Lynx which was held at All Hallows School. It was an entertaining match with Lynx dominating the first three quarters with PNG turning it on in the final quarter out scoring Lynx 21 – 9.

Lynx took the honors 52-49 at the final whistle, PNG coach Pole’ was pleased with the effort especially with the four Brisbane based players first run with the team and also no injuries to the players. Good luck to PNG “Pepes” Richanda, Yvonne, Maleta and Tiata along with the rest of the team, I would also like to thank the All Hallows student who was very polite and helpful when we asked for directions to the netball match.

Danielle sent through information that last that last week was the State Schoolgirl Championships and South Coast won the final against Sunshine Coast.  Met East placed 4th. The Qld Schoolgirls 15's team was selected and some of our local players were selected in the team.  Hulita Haukinima attends Marsden State High School and is also in our BSR Academy, she has played all her netball in this region starting at Shailer Park.

These girls will now go to Nationals in Toowoomba from 25th - 30th July. Queensland team members Summer-Jade Eastwood (Logan), Shay Dellow (Logan), Hulita Haukinima (Logan), Jessyka Ngauamo (Logan), Dominque Scott (Logan) and shadow players are Shiara Adamson (Albert) Tyler Harris (Strikers)

Getting ready for the Season Ahead

Organise your training sessions for the season. Surf through the coaching resources and work out how to approach your season. Go through the passing and footwork drills so players are aware of the techniques you are requesting for the season and then get straight onto court work and ensure your players have positional and court awareness before your first competition match.

The more skills you can teach your players, gives them more information to go out on court with and the more confident your players will be as a team and as individuals.

Knowledge is everything to both players and coaches. Players are hungry for it and coaches are the educators. Give your players quality information and let them enjoy performing the skills out on the court.

    Melissa O’Brien

The coaching forum allows you to share ideas with other coaches and the weekly blog will inform you on a range of different coaching and playing topics.

    Stats for Skills Development

Taking statistics for each match gives a coach a measurement of the team’s development. Stats don’t always need to be intercepts and throwaways.

The ‘Stats for Kids’ statistic sheet measures the teams skill development. It breaks down how many times the players perform the skills you have taught them at training.

    Carnival Fever Netball Novel

Also available to subscribers will be a Netball novel ‘ Carnival Fever’ to be read as an E-Book. This book is for readers 8-10 years old and is the first in the series ‘The Netball Club’.

    AAMMNA annoumcment

NEW ZEALAND TO TOUR AUSTRALIA IN OCTOBER 2010

THE All Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Association are excited to announce the return of international competition to its annual schedule.

After a meeting with the New Zealand Men’s and Mixed Netball Association, the two bodies signed an agreement which will see Australia and New Zealand contest a three-test series across open men’s, mixed and under-23s divisions in Melbourne in October 2010.

New Zealand will host Australia and other nations in an international event in Auckland during October 2011, with the Trans Tasman series resuming in 2012.

AAMMNA president Grant Crocker said the agreement was a positive step that would build on the growing success of the annual Australian Championships.

“This is a significant move by the New Zealand board which will have an incredibly positive impact,’’ Crocker said.

“For the first time in nine years there is a clear and complete pathway for our young players.”

The two countries also discussed potential future tours to England, the US and the Caribbean and involvement with other emerging netball regions.

    Silver Ferns made their day

Saturday before the trans tasman test was a day to remember for some of the Brisbane South Wildcats.  Bundled out of the final series was a heartbreak but what better way to bounce back than to share a training session at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre with the New Zealand team a day before their test match against Australia.

Melissa O’Brien, Coach of Wildcats Tier One, is a long time friend of SilverFerns Coach Ruth Aitken. Ruth made a call to Melissa to gather some players together to mix in with her players for a practice match and what an experience for all concerned.  The Ferns were fantastic and great sports.  What was considered by some of the players as “Clearly the best day of my life’.

    New Zealand Masters Games

The New Zealand Masters Games website is now open.
